Chemical Peels in the Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs Area

A chemical peel, also known as chemexfoliation, is a cosmetic procedure that uses chemical solutions to remove the damaged layers and improve the texture and appearance of the skin. A chemical peel is a less invasive procedure to correct scars, spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and skin pigmentation. Solutions of varying strengths, such as phenol, trichloroacetic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids, are used to remove layers of the skin. Chemical peels are offered to residents of Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, CA, by the board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Sofonio.

Chemical Peels Procedure

A skin consultation with Dr. Sofonio is necessary to determine the type of solution appropriate for the patient’s skin condition. In a light chemical peel, alpha- and beta hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid are used to exfoliate the epidermis. Trichloroacetic acid is used in a medium chemical peel to remove the epidermis and the middle part of the dermis, while phenol, the strongest solution used in chemical peels, is used to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin.

Generally, the patient’s face is cleansed, and the chemical solution is brushed onto the skin, remaining for 10 to 60 minutes depending on the type of chemical peel. The solution is then neutralized and washed off the skin. During the treatment, patients may experience burning and stinging sensations for a few minutes.

Post-Treatment Care

Peeling and scaling are usually experienced by patients after the treatment, but these should be resolved within 14 days. Chemical peels stimulate the production of new skin cells, and to protect the new skin from damage and complications, patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for several months. They are likewise advised to follow the post-treatment care prescribed by Dr. Sofonio to avoid the development of an uneven skin tone.

Chemical Peels Results

The results can last a few months to several years depending on the type of solution applied. Chemical peels are very effective at eliminating scars, sunspots, and other types of skin imperfections and offer noticeably smoother, more radiant, and more beautiful skin.
