Facelifts and Other Facial Surgeries in Palm Springs

Facial surgery refers to various procedures used to help improve your face’s appearance. Dr. Sofonio performs many types of facial cosmetic surgical procedures for patients in the Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs area, including facelifts, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, ear surgery, brow lifts, and facial implants.

Facial surgery is sometimes used for reconstructive purposes after an accident, while other patients seek it for cosmetic purposes or medical reasons, such as rhinoplasty to correct a breathing issue. Whatever the reason, Dr. Sofonio is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who would be happy to provide a consultation to determine which techniques would be recommended to help you achieve your desired results. Please contact our office today to schedule your consultation.

You should see an improvement in the appearance of your face following facial surgery. Results will last according to the nature of the procedure itself. For example, rhinoplasty results generally last permanently, while facelifts may produce less permanent results.

Facelift

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, reduces the visible signs of aging, including saggy skin, a double chin, deep creases under your eyes, the appearance of jowls, or the loss of muscle tone. A facelift is only a temporary solution, as it cannot stop the aging process or alter your fundamental appearance. During the procedure, Dr. Sofonio will make incisions from your hairline to your ears so that he can reposition underlying facial tissue and muscles. A facelift will remove excess fat and tighten your skin.

Dr. Sofonio provides full facelifts, cheek lifts, and mini-facelifts on an outpatient basis. The duration of the procedure will be dependent on the technique used and the extensiveness of the procedure. A mini-facelift makes shorter incisions in front of the ears to lift the mid-face area (usually around your cheeks) instead of lifting the entire facial region. Less scarring and recovery time are associated with mini-facelifts. However, patients also wanting a brow or neck lift may need a full facelift for better results.

Neck Lifts

A neck lift enhances the appearance of your neck for a slimmer, more youthful look. A neck lift will remove excess fat and skin around your neck and correct loose neck muscles (commonly referred to as neck bands or turkey wattles). Sometimes liposuction or Botox® injections are recommended to complement a neck lift. If excess skin is a problem, cervicoplasty may be recommended. If loose neck muscles are a problem, a technique called platysmaplasty may be recommended.

Younger patients in their mid-forties or early fifties are sometimes good candidates for mini chin tucks or mini neck lifts instead of a full neck lift. A mini chin tuck uses shorter incisions made near your ears to gently lift and tighten your skin without focusing on your muscles. Mini neck lifts require less downtime and less procedure time. During your consultation, Dr. Sofonio will help you determine the right neck lift procedure for your desired results.

Eyelid Lifts

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, removes excess, loose skin and wrinkles around your eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead for a more youthful appearance. Dr. Sofonio performs upper eyelid lifts, lower eyelid lifts, and mini lower eyelid tucks depending on your desired results. If sagging eyelids have begun to affect your vision, you may benefit from an upper eyelid lift, while saggy or puffy lower eyelids typically require a lower eyelid lift. Eyelid lifts may involve trimming away excess skin or repositioning muscles.

Some patients may benefit from a mini lower eyelid tuck, which requires smaller incisions and less recovery and downtime. Lower eyelid lifts tend to last forever, while upper eyelid lifts may need to be repeated. Because you will continue to age and your skin will continue to lose elasticity, we may recommend future forehead, brow, or eyelid lifts to help you maintain a more youthful appearance.

Full Brow Lifts

A full brow lift, also called a forehead lift or a temporal tuck, reduces the wrinkle lines across your forehead, as well as those that may appear along the bridge of your nose or between your eyes. A full brow lift will help reduce the appearance of frown lines and raise sagging eyebrows. Sometimes a facelift or eyelid lift may be recommended in conjunction with a full brow lift for the best results.

Usually performed on an outpatient basis using anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia, full brow lifts are typically completed in 1-3 hours. A temporal tuck may require longer incisions just above your temple, behind your hairline. Many patients experience natural-looking results from a full brow lift and experience little discomfort after the procedure.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty is used to improve the appearance of your nose or to improve certain medical issues, such as impaired breathing caused by a deviated septum. The amount of time for a rhinoplasty procedure will depend on the extensiveness of changes desired. Minimal changes could take 1-2 hours, while more complex changes could last up to 3-4 hours. If you’re trying to address a breathing issue, this usually takes longer to correct.

Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure, though some patients may be required to stay overnight in the hospital. After the procedure, Dr. Sofonio will implant splints and tubes for temporary support while your nose heals. Many patients return to work within 10 days, though it should be noted that some patients may experience swelling from a rhinoplasty up to a year before fully seeing their results.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, restores overly prominent or misshapen ears to a more normal appearance. Often used to make your ears more proportional to your face or to correct congenital deformities, it can be performed on patients as young as five years old. During this procedure, Dr. Sofonio will make an incision within the outer portion of your ear that allows him to reshape your ear. The duration of your ear surgery will depend on the nature of your issue and the specific techniques utilized by our surgeon.

The recovery after an ear surgery will vary from patient to patient. You may need to wear dressings or bandages around your ears while they’re healing. The results of ear surgery are often immediate once the dressings have been removed. Adults and children are usually able to resume normal daily activities after about a week, though the full otoplasty recovery may take up to six weeks. Dr. Sofonio will give you post-operative instructions tailored to your specific recovery needs.

Chin Augmentation

If you suffer from a naturally receding jawline or if people have told you that you have a weak chin, a cosmetic chin augmentation may improve your jaw’s appearance. Augmenting the bony structure of your chin can help create a chin that’s more proportionate to the rest of your face. During this procedure, Dr. Sofonio will make an incision either inside your mouth or in an inconspicuous place under your jaw to insert an implant into the desired position.

Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, may be used in conjunction with rhinoplasty to achieve the best results. Chin augmentation usually takes less than an hour to complete on an outpatient basis though this can vary from patient to patient. Patients may need to wear tape to hold the implant in place during the early stages after surgery since chin implants tend to shift. Many patients see stronger chins or an elongation of a receded chin thanks to surgery.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

For patients wishing to rejuvenate their skin and reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and sun damaged skin, CO2 laser resurfacing can be very effective. Using precisely controlled laser energy, the skin can be removed with minimal damage. During the procedure, your body’s natural production of collagen is also stimulated to make your new skin appear smoother and firmer. Treatment may be partial or complete depending on your needs.

Partial CO2 laser resurfacing may take 30 minutes to an hour, while full treatments may take 1-2 hours. Treatments are performed on an outpatient basis, and patients generally don’t have to worry about an overnight stay in the hospital. You’ll be advised to stay indoors to avoid exposure to sunlight or allergens that could cause additional skin irritations or infections. Swelling and redness should go away in weeks to several months, though you’ll be asked to visit Dr. Sofonio regularly to monitor your healing.
