Botox® and Other Neurotoxin Injections in the Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs Area

Injected into the face usually along the forehead or brow area, neurotoxins prevent your facial muscles from contracting so that existing wrinkles and fine lines have the opportunity to smooth themselves out. The three most common types of neurotoxins that we use in our Rancho Mirage office are Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®. For the best results, neurotoxins usually need to be injected every three months, though this may vary from patient to patient.

BOTOX®

Also referred to as Botulinum Toxin A, Botox® inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is responsible for stimulating facial muscle contractions. Using a very fine needle, Botox® injections are relatively painless and do not require the use of anesthesia. Most Botox® procedures take about 30 minutes and are completed on an outpatient basis. The effects of Botox® typically last anywhere from 3-4 months. However, once you’ve received several injections and your facial muscles are trained to relax, the number of future required injections should see a significant decrease.

Dysport®

Similar to Botox®, Dysport® also blocks the signal between your nerves and muscles to decrease facial muscle activity and contractions. Dysport® injections typically target five main injection points located between and over your eyebrows to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and frown lines. We usually recommend repeating Dysport® injections once every three months for the best results.

Xeomin®

If you have moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows, Xeomin® works similarly to Botox® and Dysport®. Xeomin® is safe and effective for many of our patients. However, if you have an existing medical condition such as asthma or emphysema, you should consult your doctor before beginning treatment. To determine if you’d be a good candidate for Xeomin® or our other available neurotoxin injection procedures in Rancho Mirage, please contact Dr. Sofonio today via phone or email.
