Types of Implants – What’s Right for You?

Dr. Sofonio offers an array of breast implant sizes, as well as gummy bear implants. You have a wide range of options in implant size, shape, and projection. Choosing the best width, size, and projection makes all the difference in the beauty of your results. The goal is to create new breasts that are beautifully balanced with your figure.

The types of implants include:

  • Silicone breast implants
  • Saline breast implants
  • Gummy bear gel implants

Your pre-operative procedure might include a mammogram and several lab tests.

The Surgery

Your comfort, health, and safety are always priorities at our private clinic. Dr. Sofonio relies on board-certified anesthesiologists to administer intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are placed strategically, most often in the breast crease or areolar area for silicone implants. Saline implants are filled after being placed and can allow for smaller incisions but feel less natural in weight and bounce. After placing the implant, he will suture the incisions. The length of the procedure depends on implant placement.

Implant Placement

Subglandular Placement

For women who have a specific amount of existing breast tissue, a subglandular placement may be selected. The implants are placed beneath the natural breasts to create more volume.

Submuscular Placement

For women with less natural breast tissue, the implants can be placed partially beneath the chest muscle. This helps to prevent problems such as rippling or the implant from becoming visible.

GalaFLEX: Internal Support Beyond the Procedure

Dr. Sofonio takes an integrative and holistic approach to breast augmentation, moving beyond the simple goal of increased size to include superior structural support. He understands that soft tissue support with GalaFLEX is crucial for more substantial healing and better results.

In most plastic surgery procedures, compromised or weakened soft tissue is tightened; however, the tissue itself will not be stronger, and gravity will again cause the tissue to droop or sag. Clinical studies show that within ten years following surgery, around 32% - 48% of patients undergo a second surgery to revise their initial surgical results due to a recurrence of the soft tissue weakness or deficiency.

Soft tissue support (STS) is used to repair, elevate, and reinforce deficiencies where weakness or voids exist. A soft tissue support scaffold, such as GalaFLEX, provides internal support to newly lifted and tightened tissue immediately after surgery, allowing soft tissue to heal stronger.

GalaFLEX is a temporary, absorbable scaffold to strengthen, stabilize, and support weak tissue. This immediate support allows your body the time to heal and create a healthy new tissue plane. The scaffolds break down over time, much like absorbable stitches, so your body metabolizes and completely absorbs the material safely and naturally.

What Are The Benefits of GalaFLEX?

  • Biologically derived, durable material
  • Predictable performance
  • GalaFLEX scaffolds are curated specifically to your body’s shape and needs
  • Encourages new collagen formation, which is a crucial component of healthy skin tissue

During your breast augmentation, Dr. Sofonio will place the GalaFLEX scaffold under your tissue to encourage rapid cellular infiltration. This newly formed tissue is pliable yet provides strength, support, and stability to the elevated tissue. In approximately 24 months, the scaffold is completely absorbed and eliminated from the body as water and carbon dioxide through natural physiologic pathways. The remaining collagen tissue is 3-4 times the original tissue strength, giving you a truly lifted and voluminous bust.

Why Choose Dr. Sofonio for Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Sofonio is widely regarded as being among the most talented plastic surgeons in Palm Desert. Breast enhancement surgeries are employed with the most advanced surgical techniques and an artist’s eye for balance and harmony. Your surgery will be performed by a doctor who is dedicated to ensuring his patients are comfortable and exceptionally pleased with their new breasts. His genuine warmth will help make your journey to a more beautiful figure an obtainable goal.

Your Recovery

After the surgery, you can expect some post-surgical swelling that will subside with time. You will also need to adhere to the instructions given to you by Dr. Sofonio to expedite healing and recovery. The healing time is longer when the implants have been placed beneath the chest muscle.

A full recovery may require about six weeks for some patients, while others recover far more rapidly. For about three to five days, you will have prescription pain meds to keep you comfortable, after which over-the-counter painkillers are typically all that is needed.

If you work, you should be able to return (if your duties are not physically demanding) within a week or two in most cases. You will see the results of your breast augmentation immediately after your procedure. With time, the implants will settle, and you can fully appreciate your new breasts.
