Originally used to treat disorders of the optic muscles, Botox is now primarily used to treat wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet. Ever since the FDA approved its use in 2002, Botox consistently ranks among the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed yearly. Botox, or Botulinum Toxin A, softens and relaxes wrinkles and fine lines by inhibiting the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is responsible for stimulating muscle contractions. Botox is offered to residents of Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, CA, by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Sofonio.
A consultation with Dr. Sofonio will determine the correct injection points to achieve optimum results. These injection points are muscle contraction sites rather than on the wrinkle itself. The determination of the correct injection points dictates the success of the procedure; hence, patients are advised against taking Botox injections from unqualified individuals.
The Botox filler is injected into the skin using a very fine needle to enhance precision and minimize discomfort. The procedure does not require anesthesia or numbing creams and may last about 30 minutes.
Botox Post-Treatment Care
Botox injections are performed on an outpatient basis, and patients can resume their daily activities immediately after the procedure. They are, however, advised to avoid sun exposure and to wear sun protection when heading outdoors.
Patients may experience nausea, headache, and swelling on the treated areas, but they are prohibited from taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications to prevent bruising. Eyelid drooping may be another side effect, but usually disappears within three weeks. This occurs because Botox spreads on the layers of the skin, so patients should avoid rubbing the treated areas for up to 12 hours after the Botox procedures.
The muscle-relaxing effects of Botox last four to six months, after which, wrinkles and fine lines may begin to reappear. At this point, patients can visit Dr. Sofonio for re-injections. After several Botox procedures, the muscles will have already been trained to relax, and the appearance of lines and wrinkles will gradually improve.
