Looking good and feeling great has never been easier, more affordable, or safer. Listen to Dr. Mark Sofonio, one of the Desert’s leading board certified plastic surgeons. “Over the past several years, a variety of aesthetic products, procedures, and noninvasive techniques have gained FDA approval.” Dr. Sofonio is referring to the advances made in skin-care products, laser techniques, and cosmetic fillers. Patients today can enjoy major results that don’t require large investments of either time or money.
It’s no surprise that baby boomers, the first who turned 60 in January, are the driving force behind the growing acceptance of both surgical and non surgical cosmetic procedures. This is an affluent and educated demographic
group that enjoys the best life offers. The media has helped decrease the stigma associated with plastic surgery procedures. Numerous makeover shows, news stories, and magazine features on the latest aesthetic enhancements have positively educated and influenced the public. According to the latest statistics available from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, surgical and non surgical cosmetic procedures have increased from 6.9 million in 2002 to 11 million in 2004.
Of course no mailer how simple the procedure, it’s mandatory to seek out an experienced aesthetic plastic surgeon with excellent credentials. Dr. Sofonio has been certified twice by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Sofonio is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Before administering any new product, procedure, or technique, Dr. Sofonio attends numerous seminars and conferences. He studies the latest research available, assuring his patient’s safety, which is his foremost concern. Dr. Sofonio educates all patients on realistic expectations and results.
The latest word in aesthetic enhancements is that one need not be rich or famous to improve the way they look. “There are even skin-care products available over the counter today with Alpha Hydroxy agents that produce results,” says Dr. Sofonio. “For just a few dollars, you can really help your skin look better,” he adds. Other agents such as Botox© retard muscle movement and result in fewer wrinkles.
Dr. Sofonio utilizes other noninvasive products and techniques that make a visible difference in appearance. “The area of skin fillers has seen lots of new products that are very effective and reasonably priced,” Dr. Sofonio explains. Fillers work best on facial lines and wrinkles, hollow cheeks, receding chins, thinning lips, and wrinkles between the eyes. Dr. Sofonio has had success with Restylane© which when placed under the tissue draws water in and fills in visible wrinkles. “It’s a great filler because it’s a single injection, lasts six to 12 months, and doesn’t cause lumps and bumps like some others do,” says Dr. Sofonio. Other fillers producing longer-lasting results are Radiance© and Sculptra© “These fillers allow us to fill soft tissue defects with much more predictable results that last longer compared to products from only a few years ago.

Cosmetic surgical techniques, including face lifts, eyelid surgery, and body surgery, have also benefited from recent procedural changes and updates. New and easier liposuction procedures, in which approved chemicals are injected for fat absorption, are coming soon. Let the buyer beware on “feather face lifts” that have been gaining press; Dr. Sofonio isn’t convinced of their effectiveness. “I am not sure they’re providing the long-term benefits they’re touted for.”
Laser technology has evolved considerably over the last decade. A variety of lasers exists today that help reduce wrinkles, brown spots, tattoos, blood vessels, scars, warts, and unwanted hair. “This new generation of lasers is very affordable, relatively painless, and there’s virtually no downtime after treatment,” Dr. Sofonio says.
The bottom line is that plastic surgery and related aesthetic procedures are something that almost everyone can afford. The best news is that these new procedures and products are safer and offer faster recovery and many more options for today’s patient. It has never been easier to look as good as you feel.
