When 12-year old Michael Roberts was mauled by his family dog, the resulting injuries left a softball-sized hole in the young boy’s cheek. His family could not afford the cost of the reconstructive surgery that would restore Michael’s face, and the situation seemed hopeless. That is until Dr. Mark Sofonio heard about the boy’s plight and stepped in to help.
Dr. Sofonio donated his time and skill at no charge, and today, Michael is a happy, normal-looking young adult. A random occurrence? Hardly. Dr. Sofonio has dedicated his career to charitable causes, including frequent trips with Interface Society into Mexico to perform reconstructive surgery on cleft lip and burn patients; a complicated face reconstruction on car-accident victim Jason Soderlund, son of Sally Jesse Raphael; and a total body makeover on former gastric bypass patient Terri Valdivia, during the Mixtreme Makeover Event of 2005. “I’m passionate about what I do and am thankful when I have an opportunity to give back,” says Dr. Sofonio. “These types of procedures completely impact the quality of a person’s life. It’s the most rewarding aspect of my job.” These are just a few examples of the many happy endings Dr. Sofonio enjoys within his field of medicine. Dr. Sofonio states “There’s nothing quite like watching your skills and experience come to fruition for your patients, not only physically, but also in the form of fresh confidence. And the more confidence people have, the more attractive they appear to others.”
“Voted one of the regions ‘Top Doctors’ for 2 consecutive years.”
